This category is new. Most of these tools launched in 2026. Here’s what’s worth paying attention to.
Bottom line up front: Murmell is the most interesting new entrant — it launched in August 2026 and lets you run Claude Code, Codex, and Kimi on the same repo simultaneously with file-level locking. For orchestrating agents in code (rather than a visual interface), existing frameworks like LangGraph and AutoGen are more mature but require more setup.
Why Multi-Agent in 2026?
Three shifts made this category viable:
- Models got cheap. Running three parallel Claude Haiku instances costs $0.01 per 10,000 tokens. Running three agents in parallel is financially practical.
- Tool calling got reliable. Models in 2026 can consistently call APIs, read files, and write output without hallucinating function signatures. Multi-agent coordination requires each agent to reliably execute subtasks.
- Codebases got too big for one agent. A 100k-file repo can’t fit in context. Specializing agents on subsystems and running them in parallel is more effective than one mega-context window.

Murmell
Best for: Development teams that want to watch multiple AI coding agents work on the same repo in real time.
Murmell launched publicly in August 2026 and tackles the multi-agent collision problem directly. It’s a browser-based canvas where your team and multiple AI agents share the same project directory simultaneously.
How file coordination works: Before any agent writes to a file, it claims that path. A second agent that tries to edit the same file sees it as claimed and works elsewhere. If two edits do collide (rare), Murmell snapshots the earlier state before applying the write — nothing is permanently lost.

AutoGen is Microsoft Research’s framework for building multi-agent conversations. Rather than a visual interface, it’s a Python SDK where you define agents, their capabilities, and the patterns by which they communicate (sequential, group chat, nested, swarm).
AutoGen is the most mature option in this category — it’s been in development since 2023 and has an active community. The 0.4 release (late 2025) introduced a new architecture that makes it significantly more composable.
What it does well:
- Agent conversation patterns (sequential, group chat, Swarm for dynamic handoffs)
- Extensible tool calling — agents can call any function you expose as a tool
- Integration with any OpenAI-compatible API — works with Claude, Gemini, local models
- Built-in code execution environment with Docker sandboxing
What it doesn’t do:
- No visual interface — everything is code
- No native file locking for parallel file edits
- Steep learning curve for non-developers
Verdict: Best-in-class for developers who need maximal control and are comfortable writing Python orchestration logic. Not a pick-up-and-go tool.
LangGraph
Best for: Building stateful, cyclical agent workflows that need to loop, branch, and retry.
LangGraph models agent workflows as directed graphs — nodes are agent steps, edges are conditions that determine what happens next. This lets you build agents that loop (retry until a condition is met), branch (take different paths based on output), and run steps in parallel.
The graph model is particularly powerful for workflows that have both sequential dependencies and parallelizable steps. Example: analyze a codebase in parallel across 4 files, then synthesize results, then apply changes sequentially.
What it does well:
- Stateful workflows with checkpointing — resume from failure
- True parallel node execution for independent steps
- Built-in human-in-the-loop patterns
- Streaming output from every node
Limitation: LangGraph is a framework for building things, not a ready-to-run product. Budget significant engineering time to implement.
CrewAI
Best for: Role-based agent teams where each agent has a defined specialty.
CrewAI structures multi-agent work as a “crew” — agents with defined roles (Researcher, Writer, Editor), backstories, and goals. You define the crew, each agent’s tools, and the task sequence. CrewAI handles the orchestration.
The role-based framing maps well to how teams work, which makes it accessible for non-framework developers. The tradeoff is less flexibility than AutoGen or LangGraph for unusual workflow patterns.
Emerging in 2026: CrewAI added support for running agents in a cloud environment (crewai.com), reducing the need to self-host the orchestration layer.
What’s Coming
The category is moving fast. A few trends to watch:
Specialized agents per domain. Rather than general-purpose models acting as agents, expect purpose-built agents for specific domains — a “database agent” that only touches schema, a “test agent” that only writes tests. Murmell’s file reservation system works especially well with this pattern.
Agent observability. As multi-agent systems get more complex, knowing what happened becomes critical. Expect more tools focused on tracing agent decisions across a multi-agent run.
On-device agent coordination. Tools like NobodyWho (which runs LLMs locally on any device) are laying the groundwork for privacy-first multi-agent systems that never send data to the cloud.
